Homeowner listening for the drain pump during a washer troubleshooting test

LG Washer OE Code: Run the 15-Second Hum Test First

Before you begin

Disconnect power and shut off water or gas where applicable. Stop if the repair requires licensed work.

The LG washer OE code means your washer can’t drain the water from the tub. LG names a kinked drain hose and a clogged drain pump filter as the two common causes. Before you buy a pump, run Spin Only and listen for a hum in the first 15 seconds.

A hum means the pump motor runs, so the blockage sits in the filter or the hose. Silence means the pump itself isn’t running. It’s a free check, and it decides which part you’ll need.

What the LG washer OE code means

LG’s name for OE is a water outlet error. Your washer tried to pump the water out at the end of a wash or rinse, and the water didn’t leave.

LG’s not-draining page gives four causes: a clogged drain filter, a pinched or kinked drain hose, a frozen drain hose and a clogged household drain.

None of the four is a failed part. You only get to the pump when the hum test says the motor isn’t running.

Expect water when you open things up. LG warns it may be hot if the error hit mid-wash, so let it cool and keep a shallow pan and a couple of towels ready.

I always pulled the tech sheet before I opened a panel. You’ll find it behind the kick plate, in the console or on the back panel.

It confirms your model and the drain pump wiring if the hum test sends you there.

Run Spin Only and listen for 15 seconds

First, pull your washer out from the wall and look at the drain hose. LG wants it free of bends and not pinched between the cabinet and the wall.

Straighten it, then run the check on a front loader:

  1. Press Power.
  2. Set Spin Speed to High.
  3. Press Start/Pause.
  4. Listen for a humming sound during the first 15 seconds. You may hear water draining too.
LG washer OE code hum test: run Spin Only, listen for 15 seconds, a hum means clean the filter and check the hose, silence means the pump isn't running
LG’s own split between a blocked filter and a dead pump. It costs nothing to run.

Hear the hum? Your pump motor works, and LG sends you to the drain pump filter next.

No hum means the pump isn’t running, and LG’s answer is a repair.

Why bother with a 15-second check? Plenty of owners go straight to a new pump. One commenter in an r/appliancerepair thread put the common assumption this way:

“Typically an OE error on an LG means the pump needs to be replaced”
– r/appliancerepair, March 2026

Sometimes it does.

In the same thread, the owner of a WM3600HVA said a new pump didn’t clear OE, and the technician who came out blamed the control board. If you buy a pump on a guess, you can end up staring at the same code with a new part in the cabinet and the old one in your trash, which is exactly what the hum test is there to stop.

Clean the drain pump filter on a front loader

LG’s front-load OE page lays the steps out in this order.

Have a short bucket or a shallow pan ready. How much water you get depends on when the error happened.

  1. Press Power to turn the washer off, then unplug it.
  2. Open the service panel at the bottom-left corner of the front.
  3. Unclip the small drain hose on the left, pull off its cap and let the water run into your pan.
  4. Lay a towel under the filter on the right and turn it counter-clockwise to remove it.
  5. Clean it with a soft-bristle brush and warm water, and brush out the filter opening as well.
  6. Put the cap back on the small hose and clip it back in place.
  7. Turn the filter clockwise until it stops.

Two details trip people up. Don’t pull the small hose too far out, because LG says it’ll kink.

If no water comes out, push it back in about an inch and try again.

The filter doesn’t go in the dishwasher, either. LG says to clean it by hand, then run a Tub Clean cycle once everything’s back together.

What turns up in there? LG mentions coins, hairpins and lint, and says they can slow draining, cause odors, stop the spin and even damage your pump motor.

LG’s advice is to clean that filter at least once a month, whether or not you’ve seen OE.

Top-load LG washers: a shorter routine

Got a top-load LG? It runs a different routine. LG’s top-load OE page says the code appears when the washer can’t drain for 13 minutes, and it has no filter step at all.

  1. Pull the washer away from the wall and check the drain hose for bends, clogs or pinching.
  2. Press Power, press Special Use until Spin Only lights up, then press Start/Pause.
  3. If Spin Only empties the tub, run Tub Clean to wash away buildup that formed while OE sat on the display.

Some top loaders don’t have a Spin Only option. LG gives an alternative method on the same page for those models.

One iFixit owner with a top loader found no filter to clean. With the washer unplugged mid-fill, water kept flowing, so the owner replaced the water inlet valve and the OE stopped.

It’s one owner’s fix, not LG’s, but a tub that keeps filling can’t finish draining.

Why OE keeps coming back

A clean filter and a straight hose don’t always end it. LG names three more reasons the code returns, and you can check each one without tools.

Too many suds. If the filter was already clear, LG says excess suds can create air pockets the pump can’t push out. Run Tub Clean and cut back on detergent.

A frozen hose. If your washer sits somewhere that drops below freezing, the drain hose can freeze solid. LG’s fix is to pour warm water into the tub and wait for the pump to thaw.

The house drain. Disconnect the drain hose from the standpipe and run a spin into a bucket. If your washer empties fine that way, the clog is in the plumbing, and my washing machine not draining checklist goes through the standpipe side.

After that, you’re down to the pump. One iFixit owner took a semi-seized pump apart, cleaned the impeller and reported it still working a year and a half later.

Another owner on the same thread fitted two new pumps and found the washer drained only with the hose laid on the floor. If yours does the same, look at the hose run or the drain, not the pump.

If OE comes back after a clean filter and a Tub Clean, LG says your washer may need a repair. A board diagnosis needs the tech sheet and a meter, so I’d book a technician at that stage.

Before you start pulling hoses, here are the safety tools I keep around.

Other LG OE questions

How can I force my LG washer to drain?

Run Spin Only. On a front loader, press Power, set Spin Speed to High and press Start/Pause. On a top loader, press Special Use until Spin Only lights.

If your pump can’t move the water, you can drain a front loader by hand through the small hose behind the bottom-left panel.

Is OE on a Samsung washer the same code?

No. Samsung uses OE, 0E, OC and 0C for an overflow error, which means too much water, not water that won’t drain. Samsung’s no-drain codes are 5C, 5E, nd, SE and SC, so LG fixes won’t carry over. For LG’s other codes, see the full LG washer error codes list.

Hum and no drain means the blockage is yours to clear. Silence means the pump. OE after a clean filter and a Tub Clean is where I’d stop and book a repair.
