Homeowner watching a front-load washer fill to diagnose an LG washer inlet error

LG Washer IE Code: Is the Water Not Coming In, or Leaving?

Before you begin

Disconnect power and shut off water or gas where applicable. Stop if the repair requires licensed work.

The LG washer IE code is a water inlet error. LG says it shows when the tub doesn’t fill to the right level within a set time.

That definition has two halves. Water may not be coming in at all, or it may be coming in and leaving as fast as it fills. One look at the drum during a fill tells you which half of the LG washer IE code you’re dealing with.

What the LG washer IE code means

IE stands for inlet error. On LG’s front-load error code list, the same fault also appears as E02 or E10 on some models, so check your display for those too.

LG names three plain causes: your water’s off or the faucet’s closed, your supply hose is pinched or bent, or the hose has frozen. If those check out, LG says the water supply valve may have failed.

Top loaders run the same logic. LG’s top-load error code list says IE appears if the drum isn’t filled to a certain level, and it points you at the taps and inlet hoses first.

Watch one fill: is water coming in or leaving?

Start a short cycle and watch. On a front loader, look through the door glass. On a top loader, open the lid during the fill if your model lets you.

IE means the level didn’t rise in time. Find out which way the water is going.

Little or no water coming in. Your problem’s on the supply side: the faucets, the hoses, a frozen line or the inlet screens. Work through the next two sections.

Water coming in, but the level won’t build. It’s leaving somewhere. Look under the front of your washer and in the pedestal if you have one. Then check where your drain hose goes into the standpipe.

On fill complaints, I watched one fill with a headlamp before I pulled the washer away from the wall. It’s the cheapest way to avoid cleaning screens on a machine that’s leaking out the front.

A commenter on r/Appliances put the code in plain terms:

“IE code is basically the pressure switch didn’t see the expected rise in level over the duration it called for supply.” u/CadetObvious on Reddit

The key word is rise. A full supply with a leak can trip it just like a closed faucet.

Water isn’t coming in: faucets, hoses and ice

Go behind your washer and work through LG’s checks in order:

  1. The hoses are on. Make sure each supply hose is attached to its faucet.
  2. The faucets are open. Turn each one counterclockwise to open it. If the water to your house was off, make sure it’s back.
  3. No kinks. LG says the washer can shift slightly in the spin and bend a hose. Straighten it. If it’s badly kinked, close the faucet, take the hose off and lay it out before you reconnect it.

If your laundry room gets below freezing, LG says the faucet, the pipes or the supply hose may have frozen. Its thaw steps:

  1. Take the supply hose off the washer and open the faucet. If nothing comes out, the faucet’s frozen.
  2. Wrap a hot, wet towel around the faucet for 5 minutes.
  3. Thaw the hose in warm water below 50°C (122°F), the limit LG gives on its top-load list.
  4. Reconnect it only once it’s completely free of ice.

Don’t reach for boiling water. LG warns about burns when it gives its warm-water steps for thawing a frozen washer.

Clean the inlet screens

Each supply hose screws onto an inlet with a small filter screen inside. LG’s cleaning step is to pull that filter out and clear the rust, sand or stones caught in it.

  1. Unplug your washer and close both faucets.
  2. Unscrew the end of the supply hose at the washer.
  3. Pull the filter out with your fingers or tweezers.
  4. Scrub it with a small brush, such as a toothbrush, until the mesh is clear.
  5. Put the filter back before you reconnect the hose.

Turn the faucets on slowly and look for drips at the connection before you start a cycle.

Water leaves as it fills: the drain filter cap and the standpipe

If water’s going in and your level still won’t rise, look for where it goes out. Two places are worth checking.

The drain pump filter cap. One owner of an LG WM4000HWA got IE right after a cleaning, then found the pedestal under the washer full of water. The owner’s wife had cleaned the washer, and she suspected the drain pump filter wasn’t fully tightened. A commenter agreed:

“A loose filter would explain the IE too, since water running out the front means the level never comes up in time.” u/docketbuilder on Reddit

If you’ve had that bottom-left panel open, check it first. LG’s own steps are to turn the filter clockwise until it stops and to put the cap back on the small drain hose and clip it in. Our LG washer OE code page walks through that panel.

The standpipe. PartSelect says a drain hose pushed too far down a standpipe can siphon water out of the tub while it fills. Its rule is less than 4 inches inside the pipe. Pull the hose up, measure, and reset the bracket if it’s deeper.

When IE stays: the inlet valve and the pressure hose

Is your water supply fine, the screens clean and nothing leaking? LG says the inlet valve may be malfunctioning, and its advice at that point is to contact LG service.

PartSelect adds one more suspect: the hose to the pressure switch, which senses the water level. If it comes loose or cracks, the switch can’t see the level rise and the washer reads that as IE.

Both checks mean taking panels off. I’d pull the tech sheet first, so you know which valve and switch your model uses and how they’re wired. Unplug the washer and close the faucets before any panel comes off.

Testing the valve with power on is where I’d stop and book a technician.

LG washer IE code questions

How do I clear the LG washer IE code?

Fix the cause, then start a new cycle and watch the fill. The IE code comes back on the next fill if water still can’t reach the level, so a reset alone won’t hold. For other codes on the same display, see the full LG washer error codes list. If the fill works but the spin stops with UE, see LG washer UE code; if the buttons won’t respond, see LG washer CL code.

Why does IE show up during the rinse?

Your washer fills again for the rinse, and the same level check applies. An IE at the rinse points to the same list: supply, screens, a leak or the standpipe.

How do I force my LG washer to drain?

Run Spin Only. On a front loader, LG’s steps are Power, set Spin Speed to High, then Start/Pause. If the water won’t leave, see LG washer OE code.
