GE Washer Not Spinning? Start With the Lid, the Load and the Drain

Before you begin

Disconnect power and shut off water or gas where applicable. Stop if the repair requires licensed work.

A GE washer not spinning is often doing exactly what it was built to do. It won’t spin with the lid open, with a load it can’t balance, or with water it can’t pump out. GE’s owner’s manuals list those causes before any part.

So work through them in that order. You can do most of it in a few minutes, and you won’t need tools until the last section.

Top-load GE: the lid has to close and lock

If you have a top loader, the lid is the first thing you look at. GE’s top-load owner’s manual says a safety feature stops agitation and spinning when the lid is up. Close it and press Start.

The lid locks only for load sensing and the spin, then unlocks again. A few lid rules in that manual can catch you out:

  • Three cycles without opening the lid. The Lid Locked/Unlocked light flashes, and the washer won’t start another cycle until you open and close it.
  • Lid left open with water inside. After 15 minutes, the washer cancels the cycle and drains. It does the same after 24 hours paused with the lid closed.
  • Spin Stop light. The basket is coasting down. The lid stays locked until it stops.

If none of that fits, look at the latch. Is the plastic striker on your lid broken or bent? One owner who broke theirs, glued it and then went looking for a way around it was told plainly that there isn’t one:

“You cannot bypass this style lid lock. This lid lock mechanism has three states of operation.” u/Trollo_Baggins on Reddit

Those states are open, closed and locked, and the board has to see all three. Replace a broken lid lock. Don’t jumper it, because the lock is what keeps a hand out of a spinning basket.

A blinking Spin light means the load is out of balance

GE’s manuals bring this one up in several places. When a GE washer senses an out-of-balance load, the Spin light blinks. On some top loaders the Rinse light stays on while it tries to redistribute the clothes.

Sometimes it can’t fix the balance, so it never reaches full speed and you pull out soaking clothes. GE’s fix is to spread the load evenly and run Drain & Spin on a top loader, or Rinse & Spin on a front loader.

GE washer not spinning checks: lid lock on top loaders, load balance, front-load pump filter, drain hose, and a two-minute unplug reset
What GE’s manuals point to when the washer won’t spin. Top-load and front-load models are different, so each card says which one it fits.

How you load it matters too:

  • Top load: load loosely, no higher than the top row of holes in the basket, and put items around the outside.
  • Front load: if you wash one heavy item with a few light ones, the drum has a hard time balancing it. GE says to add more items.

Your front loader can also look stuck when it’s only trying. GE’s front-load manual says each rebalance adds up to 3 minutes, and it may do 11 or 15 of them. So if you’re watching the timer sit still, that isn’t always a fault.

Want to know if it’s the load or the machine? Run Rinse & Spin with the drum empty. GE says that if it spins normally, the load caused it.

If it struggles even then, you’re looking at the washer, not the load. One commenter on r/appliancerepair explained why a GE top loader can spin fine in test mode and still give up on a real load:

“The reason the washer spins fine when in diagnostics mode is because the control board ignores an out of balance situation.” u/DuckHookFore on Reddit

In normal cycles, he said, the board watches how smoothly the motor speeds up through the speed sensor. Worn suspension rods were one suspect he raised, and that’s where I’d look next.

Water still in the tub? Clear the drain first

Your GE washer won’t spin out a tub it can’t empty. On a front loader, GE’s table lists the same causes for not draining and not spinning.

  1. Clean the pump filter (front load). Open the pump access door with a coin or a small flathead screwdriver. Put a shallow pan and towels down, since about a cup of water comes out. Then turn the filter counterclockwise, clear it and screw it back in.
  2. Straighten the drain hose. Make sure it isn’t kinked and that you haven’t pushed the washer back onto it.
  3. Look at the standpipe. GE’s front-load manual says the hose shouldn’t go more than 7 inches into the drain pipe, and it needs an air gap. A hose pushed too far down can siphon.
  4. Think about the house drain. If it’s clogged, GE says you may need a plumber.

Too many suds turns up in GE’s tables as well. GE says to use HE detergent, and less of it with soft water or a small load. If the drum still holds water after all that, read our page on a washer that leaves water in the drum.

Reset the controls

GE’s top-load manual has a reset for electronics that need it. Unplug the washer, wait 2 minutes, plug it back in and press Start.

Don’t do it during a lockout, though. If the Fill light flashes, the washer runs a 4-minute lockout with the pump on, and unplugging it starts those 4 minutes over.

If your display shows a code instead, look it up in our GE washer error codes list. A light you don’t recognize is in the GE washing machine symbols chart.

If it still won’t spin: the belt, the shifter or the board

Now you’re into parts, and the right one depends on your model. I pull the tech sheet before I order anything. It’s usually inside the console or on the back panel.

Unplug the washer before you open it. GE’s manuals warn service people not to touch the motor, lid lock or drain pump while it’s powered.

From what owners and techs report on GE machines:

  • Motor hums, basket doesn’t turn: on belt-drive models, look at the belt. One owner found theirs shredded on a washer about four years old.
  • Agitates but won’t switch to spin: one reply suggested the shift actuator, which moves the drive from agitate to spin.
  • Front loader won’t lock, codes on the display: one reply said that case needed both the door lock and the main board.

If you’ve got wet clothes and no clear fault, our wider washer not spinning clothes dry page covers the rest.

GE washer not spinning: questions

How do I reset the spin on a GE washer?

There’s no separate spin reset. GE says to unplug the washer for 2 minutes, plug it back in and press Start. Then run Drain & Spin on a top loader or Rinse & Spin on a front loader.

Why does my GE washer drain but not spin?

On a top loader, it’s usually the lid lock or an unbalanced load. If it spins empty but not with clothes, spread your load out and try Drain & Spin again. If it won’t spin even when it’s empty, you’re down to the lid lock or the drive.

Is it normal for the basket to turn freely by hand?

On many GE top loaders, yes. GE’s manual says the basket has no traditional brake and will move freely. A loose basket alone isn’t why it won’t spin.
