An iPhone Duo screen crack along the hinge, usually with a bright line running to one edge, is the inner-display fault Apple told CNBC affects “a small number of iPhone Duo units.” Apple says to contact AppleCare for a replacement, and 9to5Mac reports you don’t need AppleCare+ to get one.
How the crack gets logged decides what you pay. Called Apple’s defect, the replacement is free. Logged as inner display damage, Apple’s own repair price page lists $99 with an AppleCare plan and $999 without one. The rest of Apple’s list is in my iPhone Duo screen replacement cost breakdown.
On a service call, I pulled the tech sheet before I touched a part. Here the tech sheet is Apple’s statement and that price page, and you want both in hand before you call.
Is it an iPhone Duo screen crack, the crease or a scratch?
An iPhone Duo screen crack shows as a line down the fold, mostly in the lower half of the inner screen, with a bright stripe of pixels running sideways from it. The crease leaves the picture normal, and a cover-layer scratch sits on the surface.
MacRumors reports owners felt the hinge stick, sometimes heard a pop, and then saw the line. Use the table to place what you’re looking at.
| What you see on the inner screen | What it most likely is | Apple’s price if it’s not covered |
|---|---|---|
| A line down the fold, a bright white or colored stripe toward one edge, after a stuck feeling or a pop | The hinge fault Apple acknowledged | $999 (inner display damage) |
| A patch of dead pixels near the fold, right after you open it | Same area, same family of fault. One owner had it within 24 hours and Apple sent a replacement | $999 (inner display damage) |
| A soft dip you only see in reflections at an angle; the picture is normal | The crease. iFixit says no foldable has made it disappear completely | Not a fault |
| Fine marks on the surface; the picture underneath is fine | Scratches in the replaceable cover layer | $49 (cover layer damage) |

The bright line can be far bigger than the break. iFixit explains that one small fault in the panel’s wiring can kill a whole row or column of pixels.
In JerryRigEverything’s test, Tom’s Guide notes, the inner screen scratched at level 2. Marks over a perfect picture usually mean the cover layer, which is a different repair.
What Apple has said about the iPhone Duo cracking
Apple’s statement on the iPhone Duo cracking is short: “We are aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units. If users experience issues with their iPhone Duo display, they should contact AppleCare for a replacement.” CNBC, 9to5Mac and MacRumors all printed it.
Apple hasn’t said what causes it or whether a fix is planned, and MacRumors adds that it shows up soon after purchase. The cause is still a theory. iFixit technician Shahram Mokhtari, quoted by CNBC, said many damage reports describe “hearing a crunch, and pushing past it.”
iFixit’s teardown found the breaks cluster where the flex-cable gap meets the central hinge support. One possibility it modeled is a center support bar that doesn’t drop far enough, so the folding screen lands on it.

How many phones? Nobody outside Apple knows. AppleInsider polled seven Genius Bars and found no cracked-screen returns at first, then one a couple of days later. MacRumors and 9to5Mac say some photos going around were AI-generated. So “crackgate” is a headline word, not a count.
Before you contact Apple: photos and notes
Document the iPhone Duo screen crack before anyone else handles the phone. If the store logs it as a defect, you’ll never need these. If it gets logged as damage, they’re your case.
- Stop folding it. Each open and close works the same spot.
- Photograph the inner screen switched on, so the line shows, then switched off at an angle under a light.
- Photograph the hinge, the outer screen and all four corners of the frame. Clean corners help show there was no drop.
- Write down the purchase date, where you bought it, roughly how many times you’d opened it, and whether you felt a catch or heard a pop.
- Back up the phone while the outer screen still works. A replacement is a new phone.
- Leave the cover layer alone. Peeling it won’t fix a cracked panel, and it adds a second kind of damage to explain.

Keep the box and receipt, in case you return it.
How do you get a free iPhone Duo replacement?
To get a free iPhone Duo replacement, contact AppleCare, which here means Apple’s standard warranty support, and say the inner display broke along the hinge during normal use. 9to5Mac reports Apple doesn’t require AppleCare+ for this replacement.
Owners mix the two names up all the time, and one reply put it plainly:
“AppleCare is just the standard 1-year limited warranty. The insurance plan is AppleCare+.”

Which channel you use matters. The Australian owner whose Reddit post Tom’s Guide picked up called Apple first. Express replacement came with a hold for the phone’s full price and no delivery date. An Apple Store swapped it on the spot.
Not every store has one waiting. MacRumors reports limited stock, so some owners are waiting. One owner on r/iPhoneDuo said the store agreed right away that the phone was defective, then had no unit to hand over.
Book a Genius Bar appointment and ask the store to check stock first. If it has none, ask how the replacement will reach you and get that written into the repair record.
Watch the price on any quote. Another owner posted that Apple’s support chat refused express replacement and quoted the $99 fee, after Apple’s statement was already out.
That $99 is Apple’s AppleCare price for inner display damage, which is the accident line. For a hinge crack, say it’s the inner display issue Apple acknowledged and ask for a defect replacement.
Bought it from a carrier or Best Buy?
If you bought your iPhone Duo from a carrier, contact AppleCare directly, not the carrier. That’s what Apple told 9to5Mac. The warranty belongs to Apple no matter who sold you the phone.
“Best Buy won’t do anything, they don’t have replacements. You’ll have to find a ride to Apple who will replace it on the spot. Make a Genius Bar reservation”

If you also pay for a carrier protection plan, leave it out of this. The defect route through Apple costs nothing.
What if Apple calls it accidental damage?
If Apple calls your cracked iPhone Duo accidental damage, ask the technician what external damage they found. Apple’s one-year limited warranty covers “defects in materials and workmanship when used normally” and excludes damage from an accident, so the call has to rest on something they can point to.

Your photos of clean corners and an undamaged frame do the talking here. So does Apple’s own statement, which names the inner display and tells owners to contact AppleCare for a replacement.
If the answer is still no, don’t pay on the spot. Ask for the diagnosis in writing, then try a second Apple Store or call AppleCare and ask to escalate the case.
Check your return window too. MacRumors and Tom’s Guide point to 14 days to return a new iPhone Duo, which gets your money back while the cause is unknown. A carrier sale follows the carrier’s return rules.
Apple’s warranty also says you may have other rights under the law where you live, on top of the warranty itself.
Apple hasn’t said whether later units are built differently, so a replacement can fail the same way. If it does, the same photos, the same notes and the same statement apply the second time.
