If your glass cooktop cracked, stop using it now, even if the crack is small and every element still heats. GE and Frigidaire both say not to cook on or clean a broken cooktop, because spills can seep through and create a shock risk. Shut off the breaker. Then call a qualified tech.
That’s the whole safety answer. The rest is a money question: do you replace just the glass top, or the whole range?
Before you get there, make sure it’s really a crack. Some marks on glass only look like one.
Why even a small crack means you stop
A crack of any size lets liquid reach the wiring and elements under the glass. That’s the reason both manuals give, and it’s why the burners on the far side of the crack aren’t safe either.
The GE electric range manual puts it this way: if the glass cooktop breaks, “cleaning solutions and spillovers may penetrate the broken cooktop and create a risk of electric shock.” It says to contact a qualified technician immediately.
Frigidaire’s wording is close: don’t clean or operate a broken cooktop, and contact a technician right away. GE’s gas range manual covers glass too. It says not to cook on a product with broken glass, because shock, fire or cuts may occur.
You’ll see plenty of people keep cooking on the good half anyway. A homeowner asked on Reddit whether the two burners away from the crack were safe. Most replies said no. Some just said “absolutely not.” One reply shows how it can end:
“Used it for a year before having boiled over water get in it and blowing the transformer.” u/AcidReign25 on Reddit
A range that still heats tells you nothing about the crack. It only tells you no water has reached the live parts yet.
Cut the power before you touch anything
Turn every element off and let the glass cool. Then switch off the range’s circuit breaker at your electrical panel. Turning off the knobs or the touch controls doesn’t cut power to the parts under the glass.
GE’s manual uses the same move for smaller jobs: before you change an oven bulb, disconnect power at the main fuse or circuit breaker panel. A cracked top is a bigger reason.
On a service call I shut the breaker and check with a tester before I pull a range out or lift anything. If you don’t own one, the guide to the best voltage tester for DIY appliance repair covers what to buy.
Then leave the cooktop alone. Don’t wipe it, and don’t spray your usual cleaner on it. Cleaning liquid is one of the two things both manuals name as getting through.

Is it a crack, a scratch or pitting?
Look closely before you order parts, because you could be paying for a top you don’t need. GE’s troubleshooting chart lists “scratches (may appear as cracks)” as its own problem. A crack is a break in the glass. A scratch sits on the surface. So does a pit.
Here’s how GE sorts the three:
- Scratches. GE blames the wrong cleaning method, rough-bottomed cookware, or salt or sand caught under a pan. They aren’t removable, but tiny ones become less visible with cleaning.
- Pitting or dents. Hot sugar spills or melted plastic can pit the glass. GE says that once pitting has happened, the glass has to be replaced by service, and that this damage isn’t covered by the warranty.
- A crack. A break in the glass itself, not a mark on top of it. Treat it as broken. Keep the power off.
Not sure which one you’ve got? Treat it as a crack until a tech has seen it. The cost of guessing wrong is a shock, not a scratch.
What usually cracks the glass
Frigidaire and Whirlpool name the same main cause: dropping a heavy or hard object on the cooktop. Whirlpool’s page on maintaining ceramic glass adds one you might not expect.
Don’t leave a hot lid sitting on the cooktop. Air can get trapped under it, and the glass could break when you lift the lid.

Glass cooktop cracked: replace the top or the whole range?
Start with the model tag and your purchase date. They decide who pays and which part you’ll need. Then weigh the cost of the glass top plus labor against a new range, because on an older range the two can end up close.
Work through it in this order:
- Check the warranty, but don’t count on it. GE’s range warranty excludes damage to the glass cooktop from impact or misuse. It also excludes cosmetic damage, like chips and scratches, that isn’t reported within 90 days of installation. Frigidaire’s warranty excludes damage from external causes such as misuse or accidents. So a dropped pan is usually on you. A dropped jar too.
- Get a price on the glass top by model number. GE’s manual treats the cooktop glass as a part a technician replaces. Ask for the part and the labor together.
- Compare it with a new range. One Reddit commenter who bought a house with a cracked glass top found the whole range cost less than the replacement glass. That won’t be true for every model, but it’s worth the two quotes.
- If you rent, tell your landlord first. The range is usually theirs, so the repair decision is too, even if you cracked it.
I tell people the same thing on older ranges: price the top first, and don’t book the repair until you’ve priced the range too.
A built-in cooktop that sits in the counter is a different job from a freestanding range. The whole cooktop usually comes out as one unit, and a hardwired one means electrical work. If the wiring isn’t a plug you can pull, that part goes to an electrician.
Habits that crack a glass top
The manuals name two risks: impact, and heat in the wrong place. If you’ve just put in a new top, these are the habits the manuals warn you about:
- Don’t drop heavy or hard objects on it. Frigidaire and Whirlpool both name it. The Reddit crack above started with a glass bowl that fell from an upper cabinet.
- Don’t leave a hot lid on the glass. Whirlpool says trapped air can break it when you lift the lid.
- Don’t heat an empty pan. GE says it can cause permanent damage to cooktop glass.
- Don’t use the top as a counter or cutting board. GE, Frigidaire and Whirlpool all say so.
- Lift pans, don’t slide them. Frigidaire says a rough or dirty pan bottom can scratch the glass.
- Get sugary spills off while they’re still hot. GE says to use a razor scraper and an oven mitt. Once they cool, they can pit the glass.
If the oven itself stops heating after a repair, that’s a separate part. The guide on how to replace an oven heating element covers the bake and broil elements.
Cracked glass cooktop questions
My glass top stove is cracked but still working. Can I keep using it?
No. Working isn’t the same as safe. GE and Frigidaire both say not to operate a broken cooktop, and neither makes an exception for burners away from the crack.
Can a glass cooktop repair kit fix a crack?
None of the GE, Frigidaire or Whirlpool pages cited here mention a crack repair kit. When the glass is damaged, GE’s answer is replacement by a technician.
Does the same rule apply to a cracked induction cooktop?
Yes. Frigidaire’s warning sits under its instructions for glass and ceramic cooktops in general, not one heating type. Whirlpool’s care page for induction tops lists the same crack causes.
A cracked top won’t fix itself, and it won’t stay small for sure. Keep the breaker off until the glass is out.
